What to do if Novell Service Desk fails to start with the Tomcat error 'Failed to get localhost address'

Novell Service Desk 6.5

Situation

This documents what to do if Novell Service Desk fails to start but on checking the catalina.out file (in the case of Tomcat being the application server), errors like the following appear:

<Novell Service Desk>[2011-11-22 09:07:04 GMT]<Thread-2> Failed to get localhost address

<Novell Service Desk>[2011-11-22 09:07:04 GMT]<Thread-2> <WOApplication>: Cannot be initialized.hostname: hostname

java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

Resolution

Check the /etc/hosts file (or C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts on Windows) to ensure there is a line like this, where hostname is changed to the one in question:

127.0.1.1 hostname

Cause

Not being able to resolve the 'hostname' to the server.
