GroupWise DVA Fails to Start on Windows Servers

Situation

When starting the GroupWise Document Viewer Agent (DVA) on a Windows 2008 server an error is generated and the DVA fails to load.  The text of the error is: 
 
"GWDVA: GWDVA failed to start because of failure in creating C:\Program
Files\Novell\GroupWise Server\Agents\gwdva.dir rc =[8201]
GWDVA: Terminating Document Viewer Agent"
 
This can occur with any GroupWise 8.x release or the initial release of GroupWise 2012 or SP1.

Resolution

Change the log directory for the DVA in the startup file gwdva.dva to something other than below the c:\Program Files

Cause

Starting with Windows Vista and newer all Windows releases (including server 2008) do not allow writing into the "C:\Program Files\" directory without administrative rights. This causes GWDVA, installed with default paths, to report a problem at startup and exit.
