Environment

Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management
Novell ZENworks 11 Configuration Management
Novell ZENworks 11 Configuration Management Support Pack 1 - ZCM 11 SP1

Situation

If the shortcut for "ZENworks Application Window" is deleted ( All Programs\Novell Zenworks\ZENworks Application Window.lnk) it returns when the ZENworks Windows service is next restarted.

Resolution

This is fixed in version 10.3 - see KB 7005455 "ZENworks Configuration Management SP3 (10.3) - update information and list of fixes" which can be found at https://www.novell.com/support

For all releases of ZCM from 10.3 onwards, to avoid the shortcut being created, add to the registry, a DWORD HKLM/Software/ZCM/NAL,DisableStartMenuLink and set the value to "1"

Additional Information

If the registry value does not exist, then the following message may be seen in zmd-messages.log if debug-level logging has been enabled
[DEBUG] [01/17/2012 12:45:05.156] [1364] [ZenworksWindowsService] [5] [] [NALModule] [] [could not open registry: Software\Novell\ZCM\NAL\ or 'DisableStartMenuLink' is not created] [] []
this message is just for information; it can be removed by reducing logging level (debug-level logging is not recommended, unless troubleshooting a problem) or by creating the registry value (if the valuedata is set to "0" then the default behavior is seen, i.e., the shortcut will be automatically recreated if deleted)
