Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES 2) Linux Support Pack 3

Situation

When e-Directory is started or restarted (rcnsdsd start / restart), the following messages are visible in/var/opt/novell/log/ncpserv.log;

[! 2011-09-29 19:02:21] InitNCPServer: Cannot attach vigil.ko memory. Ensure that vigil.ko is loaded.
[! 2011-09-29 19:02:21] VTEST_PMD_Stat Err: fopen returned null for path /proc/pmd/stat
[! 2011-09-29 19:02:21] VTEST_PMD_Open Err: VTEST_PMD_Stat() reports: 2
[! 2011-09-29 19:02:21] VTEST_PMD_Close Err: *smemHandle is null Bad arg.

Resolution

The messages are related to VIGIL(novell-vigil), the Novell Storage Services (NSS) auditing engine and are seen when this is not started, thus the messages are normally cosmetic and can be ignored.

By default auditing is disabled.

Additional Information

Because novell-vigil is not started, the kernel modul vigil.ko is not loaded and /proc/pmd/stat does not exist.
