Environment

Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows Vista
Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows Server 2008
Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows 7
Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2
Microsoft Windows 2008
Microsoft Windows 7
Microsoft Windows Vista

Situation

The system administrator wants to change the default bitmap image used when logging in using the Novell Client for Windows.

Resolution

For the Credential Provider login dialog:
Right-click the Red "N" system tray icon -> Novell Client Properties -> Advanced Login -> Default bitmap for Welcome screen tiles

Corresponds to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell\Authentication\nccredprovider\Tile Bitmap

Specifies the path and filename for a bitmap that will be used on Welcome screen tiles whenever a user-specific bitmap is not yet known. Note that Windows imposes the size limit on any bitmap used for a Welcome screen tile, and will stretch / deform the bitmap provided to conform to that limit as needed.

Windows will scale any customer-provided Welcome screen tile to to be 128x128 in the credential provider, so it is recommended that any custom tile should use that resolution.

For the Red "N" login dialog:
Right-click the Red "N" system tray icon -> Novell Client Properties -> Advanced Login -> Default bitmap for Novell Login dialog

Corresponds to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell\Login\Banner\Image

Specifies the path and filename for a bitmap that will be used on the Novell Login dialog in place of the default Novell Client bitmap. Custom bitmap sizes can be used, but will affect the overall size of the Novell Login dialog.

With regard to the size of the bitmap that should be used, Novell Client creates the bitmap of the correct dimensions at runtime. It uses a pre-determined height for the image, but the width depends upon the size of the horizontal space available.

To create a bitmap of the right size for a particular machine, make a screen shot of the login dialog and observe the dimensions for the dialog displaying Novell Client's own bitmap. (e.g. Cut and paste just the Novell banner out of that image, and see how big just that portion is.)

Because the dimensions will be different on different machines. e.g. some have 96dpi, some have 144dpi, etc., the Novell Client creates its own bitmap at runtime to be the correct size.
