Unable to send email with attachments from Lotus iNotes via Access Manager

Situation

Purpose:

Send emails with attachments bigger than 3 Kb using Lotus iNotes server when is protected by Novell Access Manager and accessed though the Linux Access Gateway appliance (LAG) enabling SSL communications between the LAG and the back-end web server.

Symptoms:

Email fails to be sent successfully.

The following error is shown to the user:

"The server did not respond quickly enough. The server may be down or having problems. If this error occurs when you are sending mail, you may need to reduce size of attachments and try again."

While on the Domino server can be seen:

"500 INTERNAL ERROR (The server could not fulfill the request because of an unexpected condition)"

Resolution

This has been fixed in Novell Access Manager 3.1 SP4 (3.1.4-27).

After the system has been updated to SP4, the following operations needs to be performed on the access gateway appliances:

  1. touch /var/novell/.allowSSLV2
  2. /etc/init.d/novell-vmc restart
This will allow the access gateway appliances to use SSLv2 when communicating with the iNotes server and fix the issue described above.

Please note that the mentioned touch file will not have any effect on any Access Manager release earlier than 3.1 SP4.
