Situation

0X8809 or 8809 Unexpected login failure
UNC Paths used in login script; e.g. SERVER\VOLUME:\DIRECTORY

Resolution

Ensure the following parameters are set:
  • Network Provider Order set to NetWare Services before Microsoft Windows Network
    • Control Panel -> Network Connections -> [Highlight Network] -> Advanced -> Advanced Settings -> Provider Order
  • UNC Path Filter is On
    • Novell Client 'Red N' -> Properties -> Advanced Settings -> UNC Path Filter = ON
An alternative workaround is to not use UNC paths in login scripts.
