NOC/EVE: Event source not supporting SMTP/POP3/NNTP protocol

Environment

Novell Operations Center Business Service Manager 4.7
Novell Operations Center Business Service Manager 4.5

Situation

Java GUI for EVE adapter offers the possibility to create and configure multiple event sources. These sources are access points for EVE agents to receive data. One of the configurable options when creating a new source is protocol, which keeps the name of network protocol  EVE agent should use to get the data. Drop-down menu for this protocol option also offers SMTP/POP3/NNTP value, which evokes an impression that the source configured with this option would behave as a relaying mailing server, capable of e-mail handshaking according to RFC 2821. Please see screen shot below:

However, when selecting this option and configuring a new source this way, nothing happens, and it is not possible to open mailing session against an agent, which uses this SMTP configured source.

Resolution

Unfortunately, the SMTP/POP3/NNTP option for the source protocol has not been implemented in the code yet, as of  NOC version 4.7.x. All this option does internally at the moment is that it opens given port for TCP listening, and passes any incoming data to the ruleset engine for further handling. There is no SMTP/POP3/NNTP handshaking, as mistakenly expected.
The SMTP/POP3/NNTP functionality in event source is still under development, and may become a part of the future major release.
