Environment

Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 protected/migrated with VSS-based live transfer method.
Platespin Forge 3.x, Protect 10.x or Migrate 9.x

Situation

For specific Windows server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 workload, the replication will fail with VSS error "2147754796, 0x8004232C". The operation fails because the VSS snapshot of the specific volume cannot be taken. This error is being generated by VSS and as per Microsoft's VSS error reporting documentation, corresponding error message is "The specified volume is nested too deeply to participate in the VSS operation". This message might not be logged in Platespin job diagnostics.

This is a Microsoft VSS issue and may be experienced by other 3rd party applications as well which use VSS for volume backup. If VSS tools like "vssadmin" or "vshadow" are used to create a snapshot of the same volume, it might work fine.

Resolution

There's no workaround or solution available for this issue.

Cause

Possible reasons for this error include the following:

* Trying to create a shadow copy of a volume that resides on a virtual disk that is contained in another virtual disk.
* Trying to create a shadow copy of a virtual disk volume when the volume that contains the virtual is also in the same shadow copy set.
