Why can only root login to Novell Remote Manager (NRM) and not eDirectory users?

Situation

When trying to login to Novell Remote Manager (NRM), eDirectory based users get denied access with incorrect user id or password. However, trying to login as "root" is successful -- "root" is in the local /etc/passwd and eDirectory users are not.

Resolution

Typically this will be an issue with NAM and TID 3401691 - namcd cannot connect to LDAP server has a very good set of trouble shooting steps.
