When attempting to login using the Novell Client for Linux the following message is displayed:
Cannot perform login: The system could not log you into the network.
Make sure that the name and connection information are correct, then type your password again.
rcnovell-xregd status shows down or unused.
When restarting novell-xregd the following messages appear in /var/log/messages:

When using pure-ftpd the following error is shown:
<serverName> pure-ftpd: (<UserName>@<ServerIP>) [ERROR] Novell Client Login Failed with error 512
Resolution
Steps to resolve the issue:
- Open a terminal and login as root
- type "yast -i novell-xregd" and the terminal to reinstall the package.
- Restart novell-xregd
#rcnovell-xregd restart - Now login again using the Novell Client for Linux
Note: For OES11, install the novell-xtier-base package...
Additional Information
How to identify if there are corrupt or missing files within the novell-xtier-base package
- At the terminal run chkbin /opt/novell/xtier/bin/novell-xregd
- In the output log file you will see the following errors:
