Environment

Novell ZENworks Patch Management 11
Novell ZENworks Configuration Management 11.2 Patch Management

Situation

From the zmd-messages.log   The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found.
Devices fail to install ZPM deployments.

Resolution

Working as designed:

When ZPM creates a deployment to send to devices on a schedule of NOW, the 404 errors or content errors will always happen, if the device is not talking directly to the ZPM server.  The content will not be available, because the device is asked to install a patch before it is available on other servers.

Recommendation:  Create a deployment to one device and set the schedule to be in the future, more time the better. Check the Settings page for available content on the satellite servers and Primary server. When the content show as available on servers from within the deployment bundle, then deploy the bundle.

NOTE: It is not recommended to run the patch with a schedule of "Now", this creates a quick task on the server and can overload the server with a group of 40 or more.

NOTE:  Mandatory baseline do not build a new bundle like a Deploy Remediation does, unless you choose Deploy Remediation within the baseline.  Baseline makes the assignment directly to the bundle assuming defaults.

To Summarize: To avoid errors, the content on a deployment will need to be synced before associating to devices or user.

Cause

A new deployment is a custom set of instructions that is given to a set of patches, the only way to give these instructions to the device is through a bundle.
