Environment

Novell Client for Windows Vista
Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008
Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows Vista
Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows Server 2008
Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows 7
Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2

Situation

Trying to access a resource which has trustee rights set to [RF] for the Public trustee by using [Start > Run > \\Server\volume\directory] without being logged in results in an error "The network path was not found. (0x80070035)."

On Windows XP, the same operation opens Windows Explorer, and displays the contents of \\Server\volume\directory.

Resolution

The Novell XTier-based redirector used in the Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows intentionally does not attempt to support non-licensed / anonymous file system access over NCP.  A connection must be successfully licensed in order to perform file system access, and in order to license a connection you must be authenticated.

This worked on Novell Client for Windows XP/2003, but any such support in the XP/2003 redirector was hold-over from when we supported NetWare 3.x and pre-login access to the SYS:LOGIN directory.  Novell XTier, on the other hand, has never been designed for NetWare 3.x/4.x support nor pre-login access to server-side required Novell files.

Additional Information

This change in design also affects the ability to use LDAP Contextless Login and the ability to "publish" SSL certificates for use with LDAP Contextless Login by making those certificates available pre-login on a [Public]-trustee'd location.
