Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES 2) Linux
Novell Storage Services (NSS)

Situation

Novell NSS volumes are not mounting at boot time.
Running /etc/init.d/novell-nss start (rcnovell-nss start) appears to load normally, but is marked "unused" when checking novell-nss status
or /etc/init.d/novell-nss start does not show any output and hangs
Novell eDirectory (ndsd) and Novell LUM (namcd) are running
The /var/log/boot.msg or /var/log/messages may show the following error:

nss: Timed out waiting for NSS start up lock: may need to remove /tmp/nsslock

Resolution

Delete the /tmp/nsslock file.

If you cannot delete the /tmp/nsslock file, run fuser -v /tmp/nsslock to see which process has the file open. Stop the process and remove the file.

Once the /tmp/nsslock has been deleted, try manually starting NSS services (/etc/init.d/novell-nss start)
