Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES 2) Linux Support Pack 2

Situation

When exporting traditional Linux file systems with NCP and making use of trustees to control file access, the normal NSS utility for saving trustee information, METAMIG, does not work, since there are no metadata to read.

Resolution

Trustee information for NCP volumes where the underlying file system is not NSS (Novell Storage Services) are stored only in the file "<server_name>\<ncp_vol1>\._NETWARE\.trustee_database.xml" file. To effectively backup existing trustee information make a backup of this file.

When restoring trustees using this file, it is needed to remount the NCP volume in order for the new trustee file to be read;

1. ncpcon dismount <vol_name>
2. ncpcon mount <vol_name>
