All versions of PlateSpin Recon

Situation

This article discusses how machines are determined to be unique within PowerRecon inventory.

Resolution

In the inventory process for Recon, machine-uniqueness is based on serial number and SMBIOS UUID.

This information is stored in the BIOS, and may be susceptible to change after a firmware upgrade/update on the BIOS.

This is important to note, because if the SMBIOS UUID or Serial Number change on a server during it’s monitoring lifetime, a re-inventory of this machine will cause it to be inventoried as a new machine. This can consume more licenses than required as well as split the monitoring data, thus making it difficult for charting and reporting.
