Situation

ISV anti-virus support for NetWare 6.5 after March 7th 2010

Resolution

With the end of NetWare General Support, several anti-virus vendors will no longer publish virus definitions for NetWare servers to protect client workstations and enterprise file systems.  For customers employing this type of server-side protection, dynamic server based analysis will no longer be available,  but perimeter-based security for workstations and mobile devices can offset this loss of coverage.  Customers are advised to speak to their anti-virus vendors to determine alternative virus protection.

Important to note is that these same anti-virus vendors do provide a variety of methods to protect environments on Linux.  Therefore customers are advised to upgrade to Open Enterprise Server 2 SP2 as soon as possible to take advantage of ISV offerings of their preference.    Moreover, if customers run Dynamic Storage Technology for Linux on the primary server, complete with anti-virus protection, and the only access to the NetWare secondary is through the primary server, there is no need for anti-virus protection on the secondary server -- the files have been scanned before they ever hit the NetWare secondary.

Novell provides many resources and offerings to help customers upgrade.  Customers and partners may visit www.novell.com/upgrade for more information.
