Environment

Novell Client for Windows Vista 1.0
Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008
Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 (IR1a)
Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows

Situation

When viewing the Protocol Preferences tab of the Novell Client Properties page under the XP client, the "Host File" option was present, in addition to NDS, DNS, SLP, and DHCP NDS. Under the Vista client, only the DNS, SLP, NCP, and DHCP options appear.

Resolution

This is working as designed.

There is no separate "Host File" option in the Novell Client for Windows Vista/2008 because the Novell Client is now using the Microsoft DNS client for our DNS name resolution. (Instead of Novell's own NWDNS.SYS as was the case on Novell Client for Windows XP/2003.) The Microsoft DNS client already inherently consults the %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file as part of the Microsoft DNS client operation, which negated the need to create a separate Name Service Provider independent of DNS.
