Situation

What is the difference between closest server rule effect on content synchronization for Primary-to-Primary versus Primary-to-Satellite synchronization?

Resolution

  1. Satellite servers do not use closest server rules for content synchronization.  Satellite servers synchronize content from their parent server directly.  (Note:  This is for synchronization only; for purposes of a Satellite's ZENworks agent downloading content for local bundles etc. then the closest server rule is in effect.)
  2. Primary to primary see:
    zContentSyncState
where syncState == AVAILABLE and serverUID represents a primary server.
The list of servers may be different for each piece of content but the available servers are tried in a random order.
For each piece of content ZCM retrieves the list of primary servers where it is available.  Then the list is tried in random order for that piece of content.
(Note:  This is for synchronization only; for purposes of a Satellite's ZENworks agent downloading content for local bundles etc. then the closest server rule is in effect.)
  3. This design includes both standard content synch and system content synch (example System Update files).
