Environment

Novell GroupWise 8
Novell GroupWise 7
Novell GroupWise 6.5

Situation

* Queues getting piled with messages
* Post office not processing certain messages
* Post office logs show 820E errors on databases, ngwcheck.db in particular.
* Scheduled task for Post office does not take place

This particular case, all the above were the symptoms of the problem. It was found that the ngwcheck.db was corrupt. This can be confirmed by opening the latest "XXXXCHK.LOG" file in the post office folder. "XXXX", represents MMDD. For each gwcheck task submitted, the NGWCHECK,DB file gets updates. These updates are captured in the "MMDDCHK.LOG". If there is write failure in the log, it means the information could not written to the database. Example of error in this case":

*** Failure 're-creating' GWCheck database (Delete) ***
or
*** Failure 'reading' GWCheck database (WpckGetThreadRec) ***

Resolution

Steps to re-create the ngwcheck.db
1. Bring down the Post office Agent.
2. Rename the ngcheck.db
3. Restart the Post office agent.

If you cannot bring down the Post office agent:
1. Launch and authenticate to Novell Remote Manager for that server
2. Expand the "Manage Server" and select "Volumes"
3. On the right side of the screen you will find the GroupWise volume
4. Explore to the file "ngwcheck.db"
5. Select the "magnifying glass" on the left of the file.
6. In the new page, under "Close file for marked connections". If you find any connection, clear them
7. In the same page you will find the option to rename the file
8. Close that window and launch "Standalone Gwcheck"
9. Submit a maintenance task and this will create the nwgwheck.db
