Situation
NetWare 6.5 SP8 server running AFP
MAC OS 10.4 clients can authenticate to this NetWare server.
MAC OS 10.5 clients cannot authenticate to this same NetWare server with the same user.
The first error you get is:
Connection Failed
There was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator
If you click the Ok button the next error you get is:
Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred.
(Error code -5002)
MAC OS 10.4 clients can authenticate to this NetWare server.
MAC OS 10.5 clients cannot authenticate to this same NetWare server with the same user.

Resolution
On the NetWare servers console type: AFPCleartext off.
You will see the message:
AFP Cleartext login is disabled
The 10.5 client will now be able to log the user in.
You will see the message:
AFP Cleartext login is disabled
The 10.5 client will now be able to log the user in.
Additional Information
It is also possible to make your MAC allow cleartext passwords by doing the following.
$ defaults write com.apple.AppleShareClient "afp_cleartext_allow" -bool YES
$ defaults write com.apple.AppleShareClient "afp_cleartext_warn" -bool YES
$ defaults write com.apple.AppleShareClient "afp_cleartext_allow" -bool YES
$ defaults write com.apple.AppleShareClient "afp_cleartext_warn" -bool YES
