Novell iPrint for Linux
Situation
The /var/opt/novell/log/iprint/iprintgw.log is full of messages stating:
WARNING Malformed alert response, alertPtr->severity: 0
Resolution
These messages should be ignored. A request has been submitted to Novell engineering to refrain from posting these messages in the log file.
Additional Information
The iPrint Gateway (iprintgw) retrieves printer status information from physical printers through the SNMP protocol. The status information is then written to the print manager database. iPrint clients and iPrint administration tools can then make use of that printer status information.
Reporting Malformed alert response messages in iPrint gateway log was introduced in the 20090608 version of the novell-iprint-server RPM. The message is attempting to inform the administrator that an unknown SNMP string has been passed from the physical printer to the Print Manager through the gateway (iprintgw) interface. Because the message is not reporting a problem, simply a warning, and the message provides no actionable information to the administrator, a request has been submitted to Novell engineering to refrain from posting these messages to the gateway log file (iprintgw.log).
