Environment

Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 8
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Situation

Trying to connect to the server via Finder gives the error
'Connection failed: There was an error connecting to the server "<hostname>.<domainname>".
Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you are unable to
resolve the problem contact your system administrator."

Resolution

This has been resolved in the AFP patch that is currently available from download.novell.com.
Click on the link > Under Product or Technology select NetWare > type "MAC OSX 10.6 support" in the keywords field without the quotes > click on Search.  This will list the patch for you to select and download.

NOTE:  This patch is supported running on NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 8 only.  Servers that are running SP6 or SP7 will need to be upgraded to SP8 before this patch can be applied.

NOTE: Apple has now released 10.6.2

See 'About the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update'
(http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874) which specifically includes Network file systems fixes provided for:

* compatibility with third-party AFP servers
