Environment

Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management with Support Pack 2 - 10.2
Windows primary using older openssl stack

Situation

In some situations, when many agents attempt to PXE boot simultaneously, there may be a crash in PXE web service on Windows ZCM servers.

Error (in drwtson log):

novell-pbserv.exe Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

Resolution

  1. Stop the Novell ZENworks Preboot Service (novell-pbserv) using services.msc or novell-zenworks-configure -c Start
  2. Modify %ZENWORKS_HOME%\conf\preboot\novell-zenimgweb.conf
  3. Add the following to the file:
    FORCEHTTP=forced
    Note:  if the primary is configured to use a port other than 80, change the port in the same file.
  4. Restart the Novell ZENworks Preboot Service (novell-pbserv) using services.msc or novell-zenworks-configure -c Start

Cause

This was due to a bug in the older openssl for Windows.

Additional Information

The fix disables use of the OpenSSL package which is not required for ZENworks imaging.
