Environment

Novell NetWare 6.5

Situation

The server would stop responding.
The server could not communicate with other devices.
The servers NIC light would turn off.
The ARP table on the switch that the server was plugged into would show 00:00:00:00:00:00 for this server.
The server would not be able to communicate until the NIC was restored.
This happened at a very predictable time interval.

Resolution

A remote device using an SNMP command was shutting down the servers NIC.

If you do not want any external device to be able to shut down a NIC using an SNMP command you can disable SNMP access to the server by doing the following:

Run INETCFG.NLM from the server console and select the following:

Manage Configuration > Configure SNMP Parameters

Then set the parameters as follows :

Monitor State: No Community May Read
Monitor Community:

Control State: No Community May Write
Control Community:

Trap State: Do Not Send Traps
Trap Community:

Using the ESC key exit Monitor saving the changes.

You can then either restart your server to make these changes take effect or run the following command:

snmp monitorcommunity controlcommunity trapcommunity
