Environment

Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management with Support Pack 2 - 10.2 Discovery
Thin client with Embedded WinXP

Situation

Thin client with Embedded WinXP devices are not being discovered by the ZCM discovery process.

Resolution

A fix for this issue is included in ZENworks 11, see KB 7006995 "ZENworks 11 - information and updates" which can be found at https://www.novell.com/support

Additional Information

With both WMI and SNMP enabled thin clients should be discovered via Network Discovery. Admin credentials are being used when logging into the workstation and both WMI and SNMP are enabled and running on the boxes however Network Discovery is still not detecting information about them.

The discoveryharness logs showed :

<EVENT AT="6/23/2009 13:36:38">
Device at address 10.128.90.10 has a WMI interface, but access is denied.
(0x80070005)
</EVENT>

For both the devices there is a access denied exception though WMI interface is
running.

The reasons could be:

1. The credentials entered are not correct.
2. The user credentials entered might not have access to WMI.  To check this:
      Login to the machine using the credentials provided in the discovery wizard.
      Run wmimgmt.msc and right click WMI Control and connect to the local computer.
      Check if it gives the same access denied exception.
3. Also check if any group policy settings is preventing this particular user from accessing WMI.

With all the above checked during the troubleshooting steps it was identified that the Thin client devices were getting
discovered, but they were not being categorised as Thin clients in ZCC and not shown as Embedded XP.
This is because we read the OS information from the registry, which shows the OS as Windows XP though it is Embedded XP.
