Environment

Novell Small Business Suite 6.0
Novell NetWare 6.0
Novell NetWare 6.5
NSS volumes

Situation

What is the _Admin volume?
Is the _Admin volume necessary?
What is the underscore Admin volume?

Why does going through NWCONFIG selecting DIRECTORY OPTIONS then selecting UPGRADE MOUNTED VOLUMES INTO THE DIRECTORY ask to "Place volume _ADMIN in the Directory?" each time after rebooting the server?

Resolution

The _admin volume is a virtual volume that is used by the system in creating and managing NSS volumes. You should not, normally, be able to delete the volume, but if you delete the corresponding eDirectory object, you will not be able to create NSS volumes. You can recreate the volume object and point it to the _admin volume.
The _admin volume is not persistant.  Each time the server boots the volume is recreated.  This is why each time through UPGRADE MOUNTED VOLUMES INTO THE DIRECTORY it will ask to upgrade the _ADMIN volume.  The ADMIN_SERVERNAME volume object will remain in Novell Directory Services (NDS).

UPDATE: by test it has been determined that, on NetWare 6.5 at least, the deleting of the _ADMIN eDirectory object has no effect on the ability to create NSS volumes or pools.
