Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES 2)
Novell Open Enterprise Server (Linux based)

Situation

This document is to help understand cross-protocol locking with SAMBA/NCP Server, CIFS, and AFP as it stands on OES 2 SP 1.  Future support packs will increase current cross-protocol locking functionality (starting with OES 2 SP 2).  The details are in the documentation, therefore, this document will refer to the documentation in an effort to make this subject more searchable.

Resolution

11/18/09 UPDATE:
With OES 2 SP2, CIFS now supports cross-protocol locking with AFP and NCP. See OES 2 SP2: NCP Server for Linux Administration Guide

SAMBA/NCP SERVER
SAMBA does provide some cross-protocol locking.  Currently it is supported between AFP and NCP.

CIFS
CIFS does not currently provide any cross-protocol locking (including NCP).  This functionality is anticipated in OES 2 SP 2.

AFP
AFP does provide some cross-protocol locking.  Currently it is supported between AFP and NCP.
