Environment

Novell Open Workgroup Suite Small Business Edition (NOWS SBE)

Situation

The only currently-supported method of updating a NOWS SBE server is via the NOWS Administration UI.  Any other commonly-used methods of updating (i.e., 'rug' or YaST Online Update) is unsupported.  This document is intended as a 'How To' or walk-through of the update process for NOWS SBE.

It should be clearly understood that System Updates are those which are related to the NOWS SBE underlying Operating System (i.e., kernel updates, base package updates, etc.,), while Component Updates are those which are related to NOWS SBE installable components (i.e., Novell GroupWise, ClamAV, etc.,).

Resolution

The NOWS SBE product should first be activated.  This can be accomplished by either activating it during install, or by clicking on the [Manage License Keys] link in the NOWS Administration UI under [Tasks].

In either case, you will be required to enter the e-mail address associated with your NOWS SBE activation key and the SLES, OES, and NOWS SBE license keys.

Once activated, if system updates are available, a message will be displayed in the [Updates] section of the NOWS Administration UI (as seen here).

To view available updates, click on the [System Update Summary] button.  This will display a summary of the available system updates.  For details of the available updates, click on [Display Update Details] in the resulting summary.

Once satisfied with the details or summary, click on [Launch Background Update] in the summary screen to start the update process.  Once complete, the [NOWS SBE System] section under [Updates] in the NOWS Administration UI will show [No new updates available.].
