Environment

Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management with Support Pack 1 - 10.1

Situation

ERROR (from system update.log): "ERROR;ERROR_STARTING_SERVICE;/etc/init.d/novell-zenloader,1; "

Resolution

Check that /etc/init.d/novell-zenloader can start and stop and show status.

Assuming it can start, when the error is seen in only in system update logs, check the ownership of /var/opt/novell/zenworks where the zenloader.pid is created.  The ownership of this directory should be zenworks user.

Additional Information

Troubleshooting:  /etc/init.d/novell-zenloader would start or stop but status always showed it started.  After stopping the service, and renaming the zenloader.pid, restarting the service gave the following error:

"There was an error starting Novell ZENworks Loader.  Starting Novell ZENworks Loader/opt/novell/zenworks/bin/zenloader: line 39:
/var/opt/novell/zenworks/zenloader.pid: Permission denied
..failed"

Since the system update service wasn't checking run status based on the existence of the pid, it would fail to start/stop service.

Note, if a directory path is linked, the ownership must be correct for both the link and the actual path.
