Environment
Novell GroupWise 6.5
Novell GroupWise 7
Novell GroupWise 8
Situation
Inbound messages to GWIA fail
Â
During troubleshooting of a problem with the GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA), attempts to telnet from a workstation to GWIA (port 25) would generate a 220**************** response instead of the standard responses from GWIA (below)
Â
GWIA should respond to an incoming connection with one of the following messages:
"220 domain.com GroupWise Internet Agent <version number> Copyright (c) 1993-2008 Novell, Inc. All rights reserved. Ready"
or
"220Â domain.com Ready" (if the "Do not publish GroupWise information" box is checked in ConsoleOne)
Â
The incoming telnet connection did show on the GWIA screen, but any subsequent commands (ehlo, mail from:, rcpt to:) would generate a "Syntax Error" message
Resolution
Telnet sessions were connecting to the internal network through a Cisco VPN solution, which was somehow intercepting the telnet connection and responding with the 220 *************** message and interfering with the connection to GWIA.
Â
Performing a telnet from inside of the network or from the server itself worked correctly and displayed the standard GWIA "Ready" response, and manually sending a message in to GWIA worked correctly.
