Large increase in sychronization activity after adding eDirectory 8.8 on Linux

Novell eDirectory 8.8 for Linux

Situation

  1. Added a new Linux server with eDirectory 8.8 into an existing tree
  2. Noticed a large increase in synchronization traffic.  (Note: this can be measured with tools that log all packets, especially NCP ones.)
  3. Gathered NDS traces and determined that the sssactiveServerList values were being updated quite often.  Here's an example with Outbound Synchronization and Outbound Synchronization Detail enabled:

    OSyncD: put valueless value succeeded, .sssActiveServerList.[Attribute Definitions].[Schema Root]. MTS [2008/08/27 8:03:14, 14, 1].

Resolution

Disable Secret Store on the new Linux Server.
