Situation
Is it best to install the NW 5 server into the existing 4.11 tree or to use the upgrade Wizard to upgrade all of the 4.11 servers to NW 5.x?

Resolution
Install the NW 5.x or NW 6.x server into the NW 4.11 tree.
NOTE: Some considerations that need to be addressed before this should be done -
1. All servers in the existing 4.11 / 4.2 tree must be running the latest NetWare 4.11 (and DS) support packs as found at SUPPORT.NOVELL.COM
2. It is imperative that the health of the tree be verified before the NW 5.x or NW 6.x server joins the tree. See TID 3564075 - NDS Health Check Procedures
3. The schema of the 4.11 / 4.2 tree needs to be prepared for the NW 5 and NW 6.x server. After applying the latest support packs to the Master of the Root partition, load DSREPAIR with a -A switch, then run Advanced Options | Global Schema Operations | Post NetWare 5 schema updates and Optional schema enhancements until no modifications are needed for any of the classes or attributes.
