Environment

Novell Open Workgroup Suite Small Business Edition (NOWS SBE)

Situation

NOTE: the installation of the OpenSource package HylaFAX is only supported by Novell Technical Services when installed through the integrated installer as part of NOWS SBE.  The integrated installer is accessed through https://$server_IP:8181.

HylaFAX is an OpenSource project for sending and receiving faxes and alpha-numeric pages.  It is included as part of NOWS SBE.  For information regarding the full OpenSource project, please refer to the project website.

Prior to installing HylaFAX, the following information is required:
  • Machine Type (send and receive or send only)
  • Fax Identification String (i.e., company name)
  • Country Code
  • Area Code
  • Long Distance Prefix
  • International Prefix
  • Dial-Out Prefix (if any)
  • Modem Device (this is the native linux modem device node, i.e., /dev/ttyS0)
  • Phone Number of the Modem
Using the Basic Install method through the Integrated Installer will prompt for these data and appropriately configure and install HylaFAX.

Resolution

  1. Troubleshooting HylaFAX starts at the hardware level.  Check the output of 'hwinfo --modem' to verify that the device is recognized by the operating system, the correct kernel module is being loaded, and the device node is created (i.e., /dev/ttyS0).
  2. The most common installation problems are solved by running the HylaFAX installation scripts by hand.  This can be done by typing `faxsetup` and `faxaddmodem<device>` at the command line.  The scripts will ask a series of questions about the modem hardware, dialing, etc.,.
  3. More problematic installation issues can be identified by analyzing the integrated installer logs at /var/log/simba/server.log.
  4. Configuration and functionality issues can be identified by analyzing the configuration files at /etc/hylafax, and /var/spool/hylafax, respectively.
