Environment

Products:
Novell ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management Support Pack 2
Novell ZENworks 7 Desktop Management Support Pack 1
Novell eDirectory 8.7.3.10 for All Platforms
Novell eDirectory 8.8 for All Platforms

Configuration:
Universal Password (UP) policy is associated to the server package's parent container(s).

Situation

New Wake-on-LAN (WOL) policy exists but the WOL service log never shows the new policy launching and sending WOL packets.

Resolution

There are two options for resolving this.

Option 1
  1. Temporarily remove the server package's parent container(s) from the list of objects associated to the UP policy.
  2. Delete and recreate the WOL policy.

Option 2
  1. Create a UP policy that disables UP and assign it to the server package's parent container.
  2. Delete and recreate the WOL policy.

Additional Information

Root cause

When the WOL policy is created a password is assigned to the policy object.  This allows the WOL service to authenticate as the WOL policy object.  If a parent container of the server package has a UP policy assigned, that policy is inherited by all objects in the child container(s) including the server package and WOL policy object.  This UP policy can prevent the WOL policy object from properly assigning a password during creation.

Note
A UP policy cannot simply be assigned to the server package object.  The WOL policy objects are children of the server package's parent container and thus would not inherit the UP policy assigned to the server package.
