Environment

Novell eDirectory 8.7.3 for All Platforms
Novell eDirectory 8.8 for All Platforms

Situation

The following messages are appearing periodically in an LDAP Trace:

Preempting operation 0x0:0x0 on connection 0xNNNNNNNN before processing because connection is closing

or

Preempting operation 0x0:0x0 on connection 0xNNNNNNNN before processing because operation was abandoned

Resolution

This is an informational message that appears when LDAP tries to execute an operation other than "unbind" on a connection that has been marked as closing or abandoned.  Connections could be in this state due to a handful of reasons, a few are listed below:

  • An abandon operation was issued for this connection previously
  • A protocol error was encountered on the connection
  • Insufficient memory
  • Error reported in Proxy Conn Login
  • Socket error
The existence of this message by itself is not necessarily indicative of a problem.  The administrator should look for other symptoms revolving around the network, server health or client performance to see if a larger problem exists.
