Environment

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
Novell GroupWise 6.5 Support Pack 7
Novell GroupWise 7 Support Pack 3

Situation

Purpose:
Customer is requesting to know what we require in the way of security
rights to update from GW 6.57 to GW 7.03 Win32 client on Windows XP. It is not documented
here at Novell that you have to be OR should not be "administrator" to install or update.

Symptoms:
When someone logs into Windows XP as "administrator" and installs GroupWise
6.57 and later the assigned user of the pc ( normal or Power windows group user
) then attempts to update to the GroupWise 7 SP3 client, they get a rights
error:

"Install Program as Other User"

"Some programs will not install correctly if ou do not have administrative
privileges on this computer. If you know the password to the administrative
account, you can use that account to install the program :

• Run the program as NTS65\Bob

• Run the program as the following user:

User name: Administrator ▼
Password :

OK CANCEL

I choose the power user ( not administrator, let say as a customer I don't know
the administrator password )
I get the insufficient rights error :

"Error 1321. The installer has insufficient privileges to modify file
c:\novell\groupwise\gwcheck\gwcheck.exe, Abort, Retry, Ignore "

Resolution

This problem has been reported to GroupWise development, Initially development has tentative plans to fix this in GroupWise Bonsai and then port the fix to GW 7 SP4.

NOTE:  When GroupWise 6.57 is installed if it is installed as the Windows login called "Administrator" then that is the login in Windows that will have to run the update to GroupWise 7 SP3 and beyond.  This is working as designed and this will be put into GroupWise documentation as of GroupWise 7 service pack 4.
