Environment

Products:
Novell eDirectory
Novell NetWare 5.1
Novell NetWare 6
Novell NetWare 6.5

Configuration:
Single server Tree
SYS volume is mounted with DS.NLM loaded
One ISCSI volume not mounted on the server
Role Foward logging configured to reside on this ISCSI Volume

Situation

Loading DS.NLM gives the following errors:
"Directory services: Could not open local database, error: -661"
"Directory services: Could not open local database, error: -6024"
Novell error codes show
-661 FFFFFD6B DS VOLUME NOT MOUNTED
-6024 FFFFE878   ERR RFL FILE NOT FOUND

Resolution

The above error is seen even though SYS volume is mounted and DS.NLM is loaded.
This happens as the roll-foward log files (nds.rfl) are located on another volume that is not mounting.
Please follow the steps listed below:
  1. Rename the SYS:\_NETWARE\_NDSDB.INI file.
  2. Unload and load DS.NLM and the local database opens.

If roll-foward logging needs to be enabled, please follow the steps listed below:

  1. Roll-foward logging can be configured in iManager | eDirectory Maintenance | Backup configuration
  2. Browse and select the server object, click Next and authenticate.
  3. Set roll-forward logging to ON.
  4. Fill in the roll-forward log directory location ( default is SYS:\_NETWARE\ ) as desired.
  5. The "Current roll-forward log" should be set to "Start new roll-foward log" using the drop-down menu.
  6. The Stream file logging is optional.
  7. Finally click Start button to enable roll-foward logging.
