Cannot restore from tape insufficient privileges BackupExec privilege

Environment

Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 7
Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 6
BackupExec 9.2 tape software for Netware

Situation

Could not restore any data to any nss volume. The backups would work fine. BackupExec would return "insufficient privileges" errors whenever a restore was attempted. The same user doing  the restore could  login from a workstation and copy files out to the same target directories that the restore was trying to access. The edit.nlm on the server console could also create files in these same directories.

Resolution

The admin user had been given an authentication parameter: "multi-level administrator".  This is done in consoleone under the properties  of the user, under the security tab. Remove this parameter. This was causing nss to reject the rights of  the admin user to open or  create files  on the nss volume, during the restore. As stated, this parameter did not affect admin's rights to the nss volume when logged in from a workstation. A  good solution would be to create a separate user for the backups/restores without this  parameter and use admin for other things.
