Situation

Purpose:
This document provides Novell's recommended thread settings for the GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA).  These settings assume NetWare as the operating system and that the GroupWise system is 6.5 or older.

Resolution

There are four different types of threads that need to be configured in the GWIA. Smaller GroupWise installations need not modify any of the threads as the default thread counts will be sufficient. If the GWIA is queueing up mail or appears to be slow in processing or delivering items, consider modifying the threads as follows. All threads can be modified using ConsoleOne with GroupWise snapins. Go to the properties of the GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) object and do the following:
1. Go to the SMTP/MIME | Settings tab. Increase the threads as follows:
Number of SMTP send threads: 20
Number of SMTP receive threads: 30
2. Under SMTP/MIME | Message Formatting increase the following threads:
Number of inbound conversion threads: 10
Number of outbound conversion threads: 10
It is okay to set threads differently than described above as long as the total of all four threads does not exceed 70. If the combined number is much higher than 70, the GWIA may use too many server resources and cause performance issues. In most cases, the above recommendations work best as any email system generally receives a lot more mail that it sends. Conversion threads are involved in encryption/decryption of GroupWise email. All threads are involved in the flow of mail to and from the internet.
