Environment

Novell eDirectory 8.8 for NetWare 6.5
Novell Modular Authentication Service (NMAS) version 3.2.0
Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 7

Situation

  • dsloader.nlm consumes memory until the server must be rebooted.
  • security container has been made into a partition.
  • server has a real copy of the security partition.
  • remote servers create 100 or more connections to the affected servers.
  • problem does not occur when nmas is unloaded.

Resolution

There's a defect in NMAS where remote servers won't close a connection when a user authenticates. This only happens under the following conditions:
  • The user has an assigned univeral password policy.
  • The policy is not assigned at the user object, the user's parent container or the user's partition root.
  • The policy is assigned to the login policy object in the security container.
This issue can be resolved in two ways:
  • Apply Novell eDirectory 8.8 SP5 to the remote servers
  • Remove the policy from the login policy object and assign it to a different object in the tree
