Novell Client for Windows 2000/XP/2003 4.91

Situation

  • Error -649 in ConsoleOne when selecting a container object
  • Error -649 Insufficient Buffer
  • Error -765
  • Error FFFFFD77
  • Snapin error on ConsoleOne (Error -649) The server ran out of memory.
  • NWAdmin and iManager do not have the same problem - container object can be selected and get the information displayed

Resolution

When running eDirectory 8.8, there is an issue with the Novell Client which has problems processing the eDirectory referral information it receives when browsing containers with alias Objects.  The resolution for this is now included in Novell Client for Windows 2000/XP/2003 4.91 SP5 IR1 and later.  See https://dl.netiq.com/Download?buildid=YgCXopUnLTM~

In older versions of eDirectory, the fix involved an update to DS.NLM and two ConsoleOne modules:

For eDirectory 8.6.2 you must have DS.NLM Version 10350.23 (dated Monday, June 17, 2003) or later. The file is available in eDirectory 8.6.2 SP4 (EDIR862SP4.EXE). For eDirectory 8.7 you must be running the shipping version of eDirectory 8.7.1 or later.

As for the ConsoleOne part of the fix, the patched modules will be available in a future release of ConsoleOne. These updated files are NOT included with ConsoleOne 1.3.6, which ships with eDirectory 8.7.1. Until a formal patch is released, you will need to contact Novell Technical Support to get a hold of the files before the patch is released. The patched ConsoleOne files can be applied to ConsoleOne 1.3.3 and greater.

This has also been seen with ConsoleOne 1.3.6c and eDirectory 8.7.3. Please use the workaround in these instances.

This has also been reported to occur with ConsoleOne 1.3.6h and eDirectory 8.7.3. Please use the workaround in these instances.

Workaround: Simply create one more eDirectory object in the container that is having problems. With the extra object, the buffer is expanded and the -649 error will go away.
