Environment

Novell GroupWise 7 Support Pack 1
Novell GroupWise Gateway - 7.x Gateway for MS Exchange
Novell GroupWise Gateway for Microsoft Exchange

Situation

Changes to GroupWise user do no reflect in Outlook 2003 global address book correctly
Outlook address book shows incorrect alias on the GroupWise user properties tab when viewing the GroupWise user in Outlook address book

Resolution

Active Directory alias field is determined by Exchange and is not controlled by the GroupWise Gateway for Exchange.

The directory Synch via the GroupWise gateway supplies Exchange with the GroupWise users information and Exchange builds the alias using this information.  The Exchange General Tab Alias is built by default for the GroupWise user in the format of firstlast.  The GroupWise user first name and last name in ConsoleOne are the fields that are mapped and used by Exchange.

If Firstlast format in the Active Directory user General Tab alias field is not the format desired one work-around would be to manually edit the alias.  The alias field is not synced again and would not be changed from the manually modified entry unless the GroupWise user in Active Directory was deleted and then re-synched.

To manually modify the Alias in Active Directory Users for each user:

1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers by choosing Start | Administrative tools | Active Directory Users and Computers.
2. Expand the Internet Domain object to show the GroupWise Folder
3. Highlight the GroupWise Folder container
4. Locate the GroupWise user and modify the properties of the account by
5. Choose the Exchange General Tab
6. Locate the Alias field and edit

Additional Information

Once the alias is manually modified this change is retained.  In order to have the field auto populated again via the synchronization the GroupWise user in Active directory must be deleted first and resynchronized back to Active Directory.

There are a number of articles referring to ways to change the mappings for GroupWise user attributes in Exchange however this is not supported by Novell.
