Environment

Novell eDirectory 8.7.3 for Windows 2003
Remote Desktop Connection client (RDC)
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)

Situation

Symptom:
When using the Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Connection client to remote control a Windows 2003 eDirectory server through ndscons.exe, dhost sometimes crashes.

Cause:
ndscons.exe should only be used on console 0

Resolution

Connect to the Windows server console session (session 0) with the /console switch on the command line: mstsc /console

Additional Information

If the eDirectory server needs to be shutdown or restarted you can use the "Services" utility to stop and start the eDirectory service.

The /console switch will work for Windows 2003 servers but not on Windows 2000. See MS KB article 311926.
For Windows 2000 it might be better to opt for a third party tool that provides access to the server's console.
