Environment

Novell GroupWise 2014
Novell GroupWise 2012
Novell GroupWise 8
Novell GroupWise 7
Novell GroupWise 6.5

Situation

An outbound message to a domain that requires SMTP authentication, the use of the file gwauth.cfg is required to define which domains and mail hosts require authentication.

Resolution

Important things to look for:
  1. The gwauth.cfg file must reside in the domain\wpgate\gwia directory and use the following format:
    domain_name authuser authpassword
    For example:
    smtp.novell.com remotehost novell
  2. Multiple hosts can be entered in separate lines
  3. A hard return must be entered at the end of the last line defining a domain/host to connect to
  4. If GWIA is running on Linux, the filename gwauth.cfg must be in all lowercase characters
  5. The password specified in the file gwauth.cfg file will likely need to be case sensitive to communicate with the mail server successfully
