Environment

Novell Identity Manager 1.1a
Novell Identity Manager Nsure Identity Manager 2.0
Novell Identity Manager Identity Manager 3.0
NetIQ Identity Manager 4.0

Situation

Customer want to rename the Driver object in eDirectory

Resolution

The rename would not impact on the driver operation. All the associations (DirXML-Associations attribute) point to the driver object directly, not by name, so they will change accordingly in all objects that are associated to that driver.

Things to be aware of are that if any sort of scripted action or monitoring is being done in a maner that uses the driver's name, that will need to be changed.
For example: both LDAP and dxcmd (DirXML Command Line Utility) use the driver name to identify it, so scripts that use either would need to be reviewed after the rename.
More information about dxcmd can be found in the IDM documentation at https://www.novell.com/documentation

Additionally the Identity Manager Roles Based Provisioning Module does store the Distinguished Name of the driver in for example the NRFAssignedresources attribute.
The section of the value which contains the data contains string data and will therefore not be dynamically updated during the rename operations.
This will result in undesired behavior in the Identity Manager Roles Based Provisioning Module.
