Environment

Novell GroupWise 7
Novell GroupWise 6.5

Situation

The NGWGUARD.DB (Guardian database) has become corrupt and you do NOT have a working backup.

Resolution

NOTE: DO NOT PERFORM THIS OPERATION UNTIL YOU HAVE EITHER SPOKEN WITH NOVELL TECH SUPPORT OR WITH A BACKLINE REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE GROUPWISE SUPPORT TEAM.
1. backup post office
2. move ngwguard.db, ngwguard.rfl, ngwguard.fbk out of directory
3. go to the \\ofmsg\guardbak and delete the file that is there
4. rename the ofuser dir to ofuser.old
5. rename the ofmsg dir to ofmsg.old
6. rename the offiles dir to offiles.old
7. bring up the poa
8. verify that it recreates the three dirs above and the ngwguard.db
9. login as a user
10. send a message from that user to himself
11. exit client and poa
12. rename the new ofuser, ofmsg, and offiles dirs to ofuser.new, ofmsg.new, and offiles.new respectively
13. rename the ofuser.old, ofmsg.old, and offiles.old to ofuser, ofmsg, and offiles respectively
14. start the standalone gwcheck
15 run the following: Analyze/Fix Databases, Structure, Fix Problems on the User and Message databases
16 you will see the following in the GWCheck log:

Problem 21- Database msg108.db is on the disk not in Store Catalog (ngwguard.db)
- Adopted MSG108.DB store=33554540

and something like it for the other msg dbs

Problem 24- Database user4i9.db in Address Book but not in Store Catalog
- Adopted USER4I9.DB store=20539700
and something like it for the other user dbs

If this guard belongs to a post office that owns a library, you will need to follow additional steps listed in KB 3041438 - Adopting GroupWise Libraries.
