Situation
An error occurred modifying an attribute value. The e-mail address
conflicts with the address of an existing user (0xDB57).
Unable to assign an Internet e-mail address to a GroupWise user, resource or Distribution List, neither using the Internet addressing override or the gateway alias.

Resolution
This is Working as Designed.
The Novell GroupWise Snapins 6.5.x for ConsoleOne 1.3.6 are actually following the way in which the system has been designed.
In GroupWise 6.5 systems is not possible to have two entity with the same user portion of the e-mail address across the entire system, not even if using different Internet Domain Name, sample:

cannot coexist in the same GroupWise 6.5 system.
Following the described design, the GroupWise snapins 6.5.x
makes the check, to avoid any duplicated e-mail address, looking
only at the user portion of the address itself.
Another symptom is that you can perform the search in the e-mail
address lookup tool only using the user portion of the e-mail
address, followed by the '@' sign, or by a fake Internet domain name,
and you will get the same result.
Additional Information
The desired Internet e-mail address is not used by any other user
in the system, however a User, External Entity, Distribution List,
Resource or Library, exist in the system with the same name.
Using the e-mail address lookup function of ConsoleOne, and searching for the desired Internet e-mail address, actually returns the User, External Entity, Distribution List, Resource or Library, as it is using the desired address, even if the address itself is not really in use.
This was reported to the Engineering, however, in order to change this behavior, major modifications to Internet Addressing design were needed, therefore the final decision was to change this only in GroupWise 7.x.
Starting from GroupWise 7.0 is now possible to have multiple entity with the same user portion of the e-mail address across the system. This can be accomplished using the Internet addressing override option as user level.
Note for the mixed 6.x & 7.x GroupWise System environment:
Novell GroupWise Snapins 7.x for ConsoleOne follows the new system design, therefore may allows to perform operations that GroupWise 6.5 back-end does not support.
While administering mixed environment, the administrator must pay attention while handling Internet Addressing, override and gateway aliases, using the 7.x ConsoleOne snapins, so to avoid any ambiguous internet e-mail address assignment.
As general rule, having all the GroupWise Internet Agents of the system running on version 7.x should ensure the system to properly manage the new Internet Addressing design and features.
