Environment

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
Novell ZENworks 7 Desktop Management Support Pack 1 - ZDM7 SP1 Application Launcher (NAL)
Novell ZENworks 7 Desktop Management Support Pack 1 - ZDM7 SP1 Middle Tier

Situation

ZENworks applications objects were attempting to install application files through the middle-tier server instead of pulling them directly from a UNC path on a Windows share.
The user objects and domain workstation objects had been granted privileges to the directory on the share containing the install source.

Resolution

There are two resolutions that can be performed if you are seeing this issue.
1) Grant user and domain workstation objects read privileges to the root of the share. This permission does not be inheritable to sub folders so long as the user and workstations have rights to the specific folders containing the software they are installing.
2) Create and use a share starting at the directory containing the install source for the particular application object.

Additional Information

The ZENworks agent attempted to access the ROOT of the Windows share to test if UNC access was available to the resource and when this failed, the install was performed through the middle-tier server.
