Environment

The change to the start and end dates for Daylight Saving Time in New Zealand will require an adjustment to every NetWare server that is currently using the "old" start/end settings.

The instructions below apply to any server running NetWare 4.x, 5.x, or 6.x, including OES/NetWare 6.5, in the New Zealand time zone. The changes should be made BEFORE SEPTEMBER 30, 2007 (since that's the new [earlier] start date for DST in New Zealand).

Situation

The instructions below apply to any server running NetWare 4.x, 5.x, or 6.x, including OES/NetWare 6.5, in the New Zealand time zone. The changes should be made BEFORE SEPTEMBER 30, 2007 (since that's the new [earlier] start date for DST in New Zealand).

Resolution

PART I:

Edit the file autoexec.ncf, normally in sys:\system

1. You should see the line
SET Time Zone = NZST-12NZDT
(if not, don't continue. these changes only affect the New Zealand time zone)

2. just above or below the SET Time Zone command, the line
SET Start Of Daylight Savings Time = (OCTOBER SUNDAY FIRST 2:00:00 AM)
should be changed to this
SET Start Of Daylight Savings Time = (SEPTEMBER SUNDAY LAST 2:00:00 AM)

and

3. the line
SET End of Daylight Savings Time = (MARCH SUNDAY THIRD 3:00:00 AM)
should be changed to this
SET End of Daylight Savings Time = (APRIL SUNDAY FIRST 3:00:00 AM)

Do not change the spelling, punctuation, spacing, or ordering of any of these lines from what it was, or the commands may not be interpreted correctly. Use the exact spelling shown above for the SET parameters.

Once the edits are made and the file is saved, you can either re-boot the server, which will cause the new values to be read and applied, or you can make the changes to the SET parameters at the server console (outlined in Part II) and they will take effect immediately, (no need to re-boot). The changes are for the"rules" about DST start and end dates, so that the time will change correctly; the SET parameters do not make the server's time change immediately.

PART II:

1. Type TIME at the server console and compare the information displayed to this:
Time zone string: "NZST-12NZDT"
DST status: OFF
DST start: Sunday, October 7, 2007 2:00:00 am NZST
DST end: Sunday, March 16, 2008 3:00:00 am NZDT
[plus a few additional lines showing Timesync status and current time/date]

2. Issue these two commands at the server console, EXACTLY as shown below:
SET Start Of Daylight Savings Time = (SEPTEMBER SUNDAY LAST 2:00:00 AM)
SET End of Daylight Savings Time = (APRIL SUNDAY FIRST 3:00:00 AM)

3. Type TIME again at the server console and make sure the new settings took effect (no change to the first two lines, but the new rules for start and end of DST should be reflected in the "DST start" and "DST end" values displayed, as shown below):
Time zone string: "NZST-12NZDT"
DST status: OFF
DST start: Sunday, September 30, 2007 2:00:00 am NZST
DST end: Sunday, April 6, 2008 3:00:00 am NZDT

Since the new settings will take effect immediately when you set them at the server console, you should make these changes BEFORE SEPTEMBER 30, 2007 (the last Sunday in September, which is the new start date rule) so that the server time will be adjusted correctly. Once they are set and you've edited the autoexec.ncf as outlined in part I, which is to preserve the settings in case of a server re-boot, you're done.
